7 Ways To Get The Most Out Of Your Staffing Agency Experience
1. Choose the RIGHT Staffing Agency
You have to start by searching for the right one for you. Consider your needs and goals in job placement. What is important to you and what is not so important to you, outline what you really are looking for so you have a clear picture.
2. Be Prepared
You’ve done your research. You’ve picked the agency. Now you need to be prepared. Before you walk in the front door there are a few things to consider to be prepared for what is to come. Often times a phone call to the agency is a great option, this way you can schedule an appointment time if needed and find out exactly what you need to bring with you. Typically, it’s best to bring a few copies of your current resume, have your reference names and numbers readily available. Be prepared to discuss in detail your past work history and job details. It is also smart to bring a couple pieces of photo ID, a void cheque (for your future pay checks to be deposited into!), and any student or work permits if applicable.
3. Take The Interview Seriously
First impressions really are EVERYTHING. This is your chance to make a positive first impression on your job search journey. This is a real job interview. Although you may not know exactly what position you are interviewing for it’s a chance for the recruiter to understand your past job history and workplace experience so they can offer the best job placement for you. If you have an appointment, show up on time. Be dressed in your best. Be courteous and polite. Smile lots!
4. Be Honest
Starting with honesty will only enhance your overall experience. Do not hold back, explain the good, they bad and the ugly to your recruiter. They will know how to navigate your job placement based on everything you explain. Being truthful about your employment history, including any workplace issues, gaps in employment, or possible incriminating information (that could show up in a background check) is important. This allows for the recruiter to best navigate your job search and gives you the opportunity to explain all situations.
5. Is The Job Right For You?
If it’s not, say NO. Don’t feel you have to accept the first job they offer. If it doesn’t sound right it’s probably not the best fit for you. Explain your reasons for turning it down to your recruiter and continue with honesty; this way your recruiter can try again or keep their eye out for something more in line with what you are looking for.
6. Ask Questions
If this is a new process for you or you’ve changed staffing agencies, things may not be familiar to you. Ask questions and ensure you have full clarity on what your expectations are. Keep in mind the recruiter is working for you and has your best interest in mind, they are there to help you through the whole process.
7. Check-In Regularly
Weekly, check in with your recruiter. Give them a call or send a nice email to follow up on either a job you have applied for or if there wasn’t a job option see if there is one now. If anything has changed be sure to update them from your side as well. Remember your recruiter is handling other candidates job searches as well so be respectful of their time. Job searching with an agency can require patience depending on your job search needs and goals, sometimes you can start your job next day other times you are waiting for a few more things to align.
